About EVM 2012

Alternative Olympic Torch relay for RoadPeace

European Velo Marathon 2012

The European Velo Marathon will be a celebration of olympism, cycling, nature and life. The marathon was originally planned to start on June 23, 2012, the International day of the Olympics from Bulgaria and will finish in London on July 27, 2012, when the official opening of the Olympic Games in London will happen. These dates were now changed to 7 June till 25 July 2012.

The aims of the European Velo Marathon and alternative Olympic Torch relay for road peace are:
Тo promote cycling and raise awareness about road safety.
To unite the cycling community of Europe, to inspire more people to cycle and travel sustainably and promote the EuroVelo cycling route network.

Malden Belchev, 3 of his children and a group of fellow cyclists and friends will cycle from Bulgaria to London carrying an alternative Olympic torch and gathering more cyclists from Europe. The EVM will also endeavour to create meet-ups and collaborate with local cycling clubs and relevant organisations to put on 11 events to actively promote cycling and road safety. Circumstance permitting the events will offer cycling training, road safety training, games, discussions and workshops.

When we reach the UK we will pass the torch to other cyclists who have been affected by road traffic accidents. The group will continue towards London passing the torch to others along the way, until the whole group reach Hyde Park to open the 2012m Olympic lane and pass on the Alternative Olympic Flame to the Mayor of London – Boris Johnson.

Route: From Sofia  via Pleven, using the EuroVelo - the network of cycling routes in Europe. The cycling through 11 countries along the rivers Danube, Rheine and Main.
